💥 OpenAI drops "Operator", $500B Stargate, and the Rise of Agentic AI 🚀

AI Simplified - Sam Hadar

Read time: 4.5 minutes

Hi everyone! it’s Sam—your guide to the AI frontier, back with another week of AI Simplified. Join me as I cut through the noise and break down the important news from this week in AI.

2025 is the year of agentic AI and the key thing I want you to have in mind is to think about its vertical opportunities.

For example,

Say you work in a doctor's office.

Something you can create (assemble) is an agent that automatically

A. Summarizes the meeting with the doctor.

B. Loads the data into the spreadsheet/CRM.

C. Drafts an email with the medical jargon translated into english for the patient to understand.

And then finally, D. Have the AI send the email?

Maybe yes, maybe no.

It depends on what vertical you’re in.

One of the key things that AI will not take over is that familiar emotional human touch.

(Having a final, personal note in the email typed in by the doctor makes all the difference to the patient)

As AI automates most of our mundane tasks, think of areas where you can improve your soft skills.

The value that you bring to the table is YOU.

Your ability to connect with your people on a human level is what matters most. To look them in the eyes and guide them to the right place (where that is, depends on your field ofc).

People need People

So, as we prepare to dive into perhaps one of the most crazy weeks so far in AI, I want you to have these two things in mind.

  1. Personal touch matters. People want to hear People

  2. Which areas of my life am I doing more mundane work that might have the potential to be automated by vertical AI Agents? (Warning: The answers and potential may shock you)

🗞️ Today’s Insights:

🤖 OpenAI completely changes the game: “Operator”

“Operator” is OpenAI’s latest game-changer—an AI that actually gets things done.

You know how in every sci-fi movie, people just tell their computers what to do, and boom, it happens? Operator is literally that.

This is OpenAI’s first real “agent.” Imagine an AI that uses a web browser just like you do. It can handle booking dinner reservations, ordering groceries, researching academic papers, or even finding an in-network dentist—all without needing you to lift a finger.

I got to play around with it “Operator” over the weekend and I had it sign up for a Gmail account, start building the wireframe for a YC product, create detailed notes in a Google doc, and then share all that information with my personal email account.

The question I had though when using this is…

What stage of Artificial intelligence are we at?

Was I using the AI or was the AI really using me and my computer? 😳

…. Just some food for thought. :)

One of the parts I thought was fascinating is that you can watch Operator in action, like having a genius intern sharing their screen with you as they knock tasks off your to-do list.

Instead of relying on complex API connections, Operator mimics human behavior by navigating the web visually. It scrolls, clicks buttons, fills out forms, and takes screenshots—just like you would.

It already works with major platforms:

DoorDash & Instacart: Get your food and groceries sorted.

OpenTable & Priceline: Book restaurants and travel accommodations.

StubHub & Uber: Grab event tickets and arrange your ride.

Want to try it out? Head over to operator.chatgpt.com. For now, it’s exclusive to Pro users in the US ($200/month), but OpenAI has plans to expand access soon.

Pro Tip: Just like with all AI prompting, be specific. Instead of saying, “Find me a hotel,” say, “Find me a pet-friendly hotel in lower east side Manhattan with free parking for next weekend under $300/night.”

The future of AI agents is here, and soon, we might even need to keep track of which brands our agents prefer when tackling tasks. A new era of SEO might just be around the corner (more on this in next week’s newsletter, stay tuned ;))!

Announcing The Stargate Project

The Stargate Project is a monumental step toward shaping the future of AI infrastructure.

OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle, and NVIDIA have joined forces to invest a staggering $500 billion over the next four years in building cutting-edge AI facilities across the United States. The first $100 billion is already being deployed, starting in Texas, with plans for additional campuses nationwide.

Why does this matter? This investment secures American leadership in AI, reindustrializes the U.S., and creates hundreds of thousands of jobs. But it’s not just about economic growth; it’s also a strategic move to protect national security and enhance global AI capabilities (as the race is only heating up).

Key collaborators like Arm, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Oracle, and OpenAI bring their expertise to the table. This initiative builds on long-standing partnerships, from OpenAI’s collaboration with NVIDIA since 2016 to its deep ties with Microsoft through Azure.

As this ambitious project unfolds, Stargate aims to connect with firms across the data center landscape, from construction and equipment to power and land.

🐳 Why Deepseek may spell the end for OpenAI

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup, has entered the scene with R1, a reasoning model rivaling OpenAI’s best.

Key Features:

  • Chain-of-Thought Reasoning: R1 breaks down problems step-by-step, mimicking human logic (You’ll see the way it thinks feels oddly human).

  • Performance: It competes with leading models on major benchmarks, showcasing its analytical prowess.

  • Adaptability: Although R1 blocks certain political content, it’s proving versatile in other domains.

The crazy part?

Deepseek wasn’t even started as an AI company. It is a quantitative hedge fund that wanted to build its own AI models as a side project. Incredible!

Why it matters: They were able to accomplish results that can compare to OpenAI’s o1 model at a fraction of the cost and time. This massively undermines the current demand for more brute force (in terms of computing power with data centers and more extensive model training).

You can connect your LinkedIn, Twitter, or Gmail account.

  3. Select ‘LinkedIn’, click on ‘Download your LinkedIn data’, and follow the instructions.

  4. Wait for your CSV file to be ready. Once done, download it.

  5. Upload your ‘Connections.csv’ file to Happenstance, wait for it to process.
